The Gulkana is one of only 25 rivers in Alaska to become a “National Wild and Scenic River”. The rich habitat of the Gulkana watershed provides a variety of species to target while fishing. The drainages indigenous species include arctic Grayling, King (Chinook) salmon, Sockeye (Red) Salmon, and one of the most northerly populations of wild Rainbow Trout. The lower Gulkana is known for its great opportunity to ambush extremely fresh salmon headed upstream to their
spawning grounds. The lowest section from the Richardson Highway Bridge to the confluence with the Copper is designated as fly fishing only. This run provides an exclusive opportunity to target both King Salmon and Red Salmon. These waters are very conducive for the beginner as well as the expert fly-fishing enthusiast. Be sure to ask about custom fishing trips on the Gulkana River. This trip includes water and a snack.
